How do I install, configure and use VPN (Virtual Private Network ) on a non-SUNY Erie computer?

Note:

  • These instructions are for the Microsoft Windows 10 operating system.  Windows 7 is not supported
  • These instructions will only work if you are not connected to the SUNY Erie wired or wireless network.
  • To use the SUNY Erie VPN client, you must be a SUNY Erie faculty or staff member and have a fast Internet connection.
  • Before connecting to the VPN client, please verify that your computer has the latest Microsoft Windows patches (available at  Microsoft Windows updates), and that you have an antivirus software package with the latest virus definitions.

Answer:

  1. Open your web browser and go to https://vpn.ecc.edu. Again, note that you can only reach this site if you are not connected to the SUNY Erie network - the page will not open if you are connected to the SUNY Erie network.
  2. You will be redirected to the Microsoft Login page. Enter your SUNY Erie email and password into the box.
  3.  After you successfully log in, you will see a list of clients to download. Click the link to download the appropriate client for your computer.
In order to find the correct version of Windows, please type 'System' into the search box near the start button.
  4. The installer should start after the download completes. Click the Next button through all the prompts. When the installation is complete, click the close button.
  5. When finished, there will be an icon in your Task Bar, down near the time, showing the VPN status . Click the icon, there will be a box to enter the portal address. In the box type vpn.ecc.edu and then click Connect.
  6. Wait for the VPN to prompt you for authentication and then sign in using your SUNY Erie email address and password.
  7. MFA will then trigger the secondary form of authentication, text message or authenticator app, depending on your personal settings.
  8. When you successfully connect, the client will read "Connected, Your connection has been secured."
  9. To disconnect, click the gear icon and then Disable. You will see the status change to Disabled. Please disconnect after you no longer need access to internal SUNY Erie resources.

Installation has completed:

  • Type “GlobalProtect” in the “Type here to search” box at the bottom left of your screen, next to the Windows icon.
  • The Microsoft login will appear. Enter your SUNY Erie email and your normal SUNY Erie password.
  • Your login will enable the VPN (Virtual Private Network).
  • MFA verification will be prompted every 30 days and not each time that you log into GlobalProtect.
