How do I change my MFA to the Microsoft Authenticator Application?

You will need to have a computer and a mobile device in front of you to complete this setup process.

As of September 1, 2026, Passkeys are the default Microsoft sign-in experience for authentication, replacing texts and calls.  Passkeys can be saved to a platform credential manager (iCloud Keychain or Good Password Manager) or to a user's device, such as Microsoft Authenticator.

Installing the Authenticator App:

  1. From your computer, go to aka.ms/mfasetup
  2. Log in using your SUNY Erie email address and password.

  3. Click on "+ Add sign-in Method"

  4. Choose Microsoft Authenticator

  5. On your mobile device, download the Microsoft Authenticator application from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
  6. From your computer, click Next

  7. From your mobile device, sign in to the Authenticator application with your SUNY Erie email address and password.
  8. If prompted, allow notifications
  9. Click the "+" in the top right corner to add your account.
  10. Choose "Work or School Account"
  11. From your computer, click Next

  12. From your mobile device, tap Scan QR Code

  13. From your computer, click Next
  14. From your mobile device, enter the code on your computer screen.
  15. From your computer, click Done

Authenticator Application Registered:

Microsoft Authenticator is listed as a sign-in method.
